How to reduce Kraken fees: SEPA and Kraken Pro

To compare Kraken fees, distinguish funding your account from executing a purchase. SEPA deposits and Kraken Pro can reduce some costs, but the result depends on the payment method, order type and account terms.

Why do Kraken's fees vary so much?

To compare Kraken fees, distinguish funding your account from executing a purchase. SEPA deposits and Kraken Pro can reduce some costs, but the result depends on the payment method, order type and account terms.

Should you deposit by card or by SEPA transfer?

Several euro SEPA deposit methods are free at Kraken, subject to availability on your account. Card payment fees depend on the route and country and may add to trading fees and the spread. Check the total shown before confirming and any separate fees charged by your bank.

It is also the right habit for the referral programme: to aim for the guaranteed €30 Kraken bonus, the deposit of at least €200 is best made by transfer (free) rather than by card.

How do you use Kraken Pro to pay less in fees?

Kraken Pro works with your Kraken account, on the web or in the app. The first spot tier charges 0.40 % maker / 0.80 % taker, excluding promotions. A maker order adds liquidity to the order book; a taker order executes against an existing order. A limit order can be a taker order if it executes immediately. Your tier, trading pair and applicable offers may change these rates.

  • Install the Kraken Pro app and log in with your Kraken credentials.
  • Choose the pair, for example BTC/EUR.
  • Place a market order (immediate) or a limit order (you set the price).
  • Check the displayed fees and total amount before confirming your order.

Fees and bonus: the net-volume trap

If you're after the referral bonus, remember that fees do not count towards the required purchase volume (€200 of crypto, excluding stablecoins). So deposit a little more (about €205) so that fees don't push your net volume below the threshold.

How much can you save in total?

Calculation example at the first spot tier's taker rate: a €200 order incurs €1.60 in trading fees; a €500 order incurs €4.00. These figures exclude other payment, spread, slippage or withdrawal costs. Savings against another route depend on the displayed quote: no percentage reduction is guaranteed.
